Instructions for Installing The Mat King Safety Stair Treads

General Instructions
Installing The Mat King safety stair treads is easy when the installation instructions described below are followed. Before beginning, the stairway must be broom-cleaned and checked for soundness. Any loose treadsshould be fastened down, wood treads nailed and so forth.

The Mat King safety stair treads are furnished with holes and coutersunk for fasteners. They are manufactured in many lengths so they will fit individual stairways. This eliminates any need for cutting and fitting on the jobsite. However, there are times when treads ordered to the correct width become incorrect due to unanticipated changes in the field conditions and cutting may be the only available option other than waiting for new treads to be manufactured and shipped.

When on site cutting becomes necessary, we suggest that the following guidelines be followed to bring about a neat and safe application and so that the tailoring be done in a safe and efficient way. Unless esthetic appeal is of absolutely no consideration, treads supplied by the mill with beveled edges on the sides should be trimmed such that half of the material to be removed is taken from each end to avoid having one end look radically different than the other.

Place tread face up and use an abrasive cut-off saw, which is also referred to as a metal chop saw, with a 1/8 inch thick cement cutting-type cut-off saw blade. The use of any kind of saw with teeth is to be strictly avoided. Burring of the aluminum base that may result for the sawing action can be cleaned away with a Number 11 type wire brush wheel. Please Note: The sides of the stair treads trimmed in this fashion can not be beveled.

Installation Instructions
Worn – Concrete, Terrazzo, Marble and Slate Stairs et al: An application of leveling compound should be made over dished or worn stairs to provide a level-bearing surface for the safety stair treads. Smooth steps such as marble, terrazzo, tile, metal etc., should be roughed up to insure good adhesion. The best methods to rough up the surface are grinding, sandblasting, or mechanical scarification. After mechanical preparation, remove all dust and loose particles by means of a heavy-duty industrial vacuum cleaner. All other types of surfaces need only to be thoroughly cleaned. Simply mix compound in mortar pan, (directions for mixing are shown on the drum) apply and trowel to a feather edge. Troweling against a straight-edge board held to front of step (see photograph) provides a square edge. As soon as step is leveled, the board may be moved to the next step, and no form is needed. Begin at the top of the stairs and work down. Compound dries and is ready for treads in 2 to 4 hours.

The Mat King recommends using Tapcon™ screws to fasten down the Safety Stair Treads. This is the most popular method of securing the Safety Stair Treads. Tapcon™ screws offer many advantages: (a) No layout or hole spotting required; (b) Fast easy installation; (c) Removable; (d) Use with masonry drill bit for maximum holding power. (e) Recommended embedment is 1” to 1-3/4”.

Tapcon™ screws can be used in concrete, block and brick. No other fasteners are required. No other fasteners are required. The Tapcon™ screws are made of case hardened carbon steel with RIE coating for corrosive environments. They are furnished in a flat head design 3/16” x 1-1/4”.

Instructions for use: Using a 5/32” drill bit, drill a hole a minimum of 1/2” deeper than the maximum embedment depth of the anchor (minimum anchor embedment should be 1”). (Apply a coating of The Mat King Water-Based Construction Adhesive to step and back of safety tread. Place the safety tread in position on step and move back and forth a time or two to obtain a vulcanized bond). Place anchor through tread into pilot hole and drive in with Phillips bit.

The safety treads can also be fastened down with screws and lead expansion shields. Place tread on stair, mark holes for drilling, remove tread and drill holes with drill using a 5/16” carbide-tipped drill bit. Important: Do not use power tools to tighten fasteners at risk of stripping threads. Before inserting shields into holes, dip each shield in The Mat King Water-Based Construction Adhesive to prevent turning in hole while tightening screw. (Apply a coating of the same adhesive to step, or back of safety tread. Place the safety tread in position on step and move back and forth a time or two to obtain a vulcanized bond). Then, fasten down with flat-head screws.

Unworn –Concrete, Terrazzo, Marble and Slate Stairs et al: Follow same installation instructions described under “Worn – Stairs” except that leveling compound is not applied.

Worn - Wood Stairs: Follow installation instructions described under “Worn – Concrete Stairs” for applying leveling compound. The hardened compound readily holds screws. Wood stairs require only starter holes for wood screws. Construction adhesive is not necessary for wood steps but can be used if so desired.

Unworn – Wood Stairs: Follow same installation instructions described under “Worn – Wood Stairs” except that leveling compound is not applied.

Worn - Metal Stairs: Follow installation instructions described under “Worn – Concrete Stairs” for applying plastic leveling compound. When fastening treads down, follow instructions described under Tapcon™ screws except drill completely through the step using a 5/32” drill bit and fasten with machine screws and nuts or self-tapping screws.

Unworn – Metal Stairs: Follow same installation instructions described under “Worn – Metal Stairs” except that leveling compound is not applied.

Leveling Compound
Leveling Compound is furnished in 50 lb. drums and consists of specially formulated components to which water gets added, then mix and the compound is ready for troweling. It will not shrink as it dries and can be featheredged. On drum covers 50 square feet of surface in 1/8” thickness. Compound adheres to any type of stair tread; wood, concrete, steel, marble, etc. No primer required. Directions for mixing are shown on the drum.
