Installation Instructions

Security Measures
Using barricades, cones or other means, block off work area to pedestrian and vehicular traffic during installation process. Have work crew prepared to offer alternate accessible pathway to disabled pedestrians during time work is being performed and adhesive is curing.
General Conditions
Air temperature 60º F and rising.
Surface temperature 60º F and rising.
Surface must be completely dry with no precipitation during the 24 hours prior to installation.
Surface must be clean and free of all foreign or contaminating agents such as foreign oils, grease, silt, loose aggregate, sand particles, curing compounds, sealants and other forms of dirt and soil.
Be certain that automatic sprinklers or other sources of water will not be turned on during the installation and curing process.
Universal Application Rules

All new concrete must have a full 21-day cure.

Always use butt joints when placing sections end-to-end. Never overlap mats onto each other.

Do not ally on deteriorating surfaces or marked surfaces.

During winter, early spring and late fall in some areas the weather conditions may not be appropriate for installation of Detectable Warning Mats.

Portland Cement Applications

Assure all general conditions are favorable.

Clean surface as outlined above. All curing compounds must be removed with sandblasting, grinding, wire brushing or other acceptable methods that assure complete curing compound removal. Follow by blowing surface with high pressure air or thorough sweeping. All contaminating and foreign materials must be removed.

Patch any holes or cracks larger than 1/8".

Mat Placement

Place the mats in the position in which they will be glued. If mats need to be cut  or trimmed, make necessary cuts and fit each mat into place. Once all mats are in place, apply a 2" wide strip of duct tape around the entire perimeter. (Duct tape works well in most cases). Leave a 1/8" space between the tape and the edge of the mats. Be very careful that the tape does not overlap onto the mats, as this will leave an area without glue when the mats are installed. Remove mats and re-clean the area to receive adhesive.

Adhesive Application

Mix two-part ground adhesive using equal mounts of Part A and Part B following instructions on container. Apply adhesive to the entire area inside the taped perimeter using a 3/32" notched trowel (approx. 10 mil thickness). Be certain that the area has 100% coverage of the ground adhesive. Allow the adhesive to become tacky to the touch. The adhesive sets in about 40 minutes (see directions on container) do not allow adhesive to dry. Each quart set of adhesive should cover approximately 32 square feet. Use of too much adhesive may cause bubbles and extend curing time.

Mat Installation

Place mats one at a time in their pre-laid positions. Take care to position them tightly against each other and use the tape edge as your guide. Press firmly from the center of each mat to the outer edges to remove air bubbles. Be sure to press between the dome areas in order in ensure that all air trapped under the mat is removed. When joining mats together, spot tack the edges together as tightly as possible using drops of seam sealer, or or use duct tape to temporarily hold the seams together. When mats are in position, carefully remove the tape from the perimeter.  Press down the corners and edges of each mat firmly. Once mats are in place, cover with 1/4" plywood or similar material and weight with several sand bags weighing approximately 25 lbs. each. Allow weight to remain for several hours to insure complete bonding of the adhesive.

Seam Sealer Application

Apply a small bead of seam seal glue along all joined seams. Be certain to follow manufacturers instructions. Do not allow glue to touch skin as it is very fast acting and will glue fingers together.

Edge Sealer Application

Apply a small bead of edge sealer along all outer edges.

Anchor Pin Installation

After the mats have been installed and the ground adhesive has set, nylon anchors can be installed. Using a 1/4" masonry bit, drill 1/4" holes through the mats and at least 1" into the concrete. Place 1/4" x 1" nylon anchors in the holes and tap them in with a hammer. Do not place anchors in the domes. See layout for recommended anchor placement. Place one anchor at each location indicated by the dark spots.

NOTICE: Installation of mats on asphalt, uncured concrete, or using non-approved ground adhesive will void manufacturers limited warranty.

Adhesive Information

Use only adhesive, edge seal, seam seal and anchors provided with the Detectable Warning Mats. It is not recommended to install mats on asphalt or uncured concrete..

The adhesive is available in 1-Quart and 5-Gallon sets. One 1-Quart Set provides coverage for (4) 2'x4' mats, or (4) 2-1/2' x 3' mats, or (2-1/2) 3'x4' mats; One 5-Gallon Set provides coverage for (100) 2'x4' mats, or (100) 2-1/2' x 3' mats, or (65) 3'x4' mats.

The work life of is 40-70 minutes, with the adhesive reaching full cure in 7 days.
