Tuf-Block Interlocking Horse Stall Matting Installation

Tuf-Block Interlocking Horse Stall Matting Installation

Tuf-Block Interlocking Horse Stall Matting is easy to install. Refer to the diagramed layout of the stall size to be covered to see how the mats are to be positioned in the stall. Make certain that the substrate on which the matting will be placed has been correctly prepared before installing mats.

Each mat has a number on the edge that corresponds to the diagramed layout. This is provided to help in the positioning of the mats in the stall. Locate the mats in the stall with the diamond side facing up. Pull the mats together so that the interlocks mate and then press the mats together by hand or by stepping on them with once feet to manipulate the interlocks together one into the other.

Cutting

Mats are easily cut to fit to size or to fit around obstructions. It is recommended that a utility knife with a straight edge be used to make the needed cuts. Scribe the mat several times with the knife until the mat is cut through. For larger jobs, a reciprocating saw may be used.

Preparation of the Substrate

The stall substrate is important. Tuf-Block Interlocking Horse Stall Matting can be placed over concrete, asphalt, wood or any level well-compacted surface that is not affected by freeze/thaw conditions.

Clean the existing stall surface of any old bedding. It is not necessary to wash down or to dry the stall substrate. Moisture will not affect Tuf-Block Interlocking Horse Stall Matting.

An economical alternative to concrete or asphalt substrates is crushed fines. These are available at rock quarries that crush stone. Depending on the location, commonly found materials are limestone, or granite fines, which should not exceed 1/8” in size. The fines are easy to work with, compact well, provide good drainage and stand up well to freeze/thaw conditions. Fines should be installed to a depth of 4 to 5 inches, which may require excavating some of the existing material to maintain current stall elevations.

It is important that the fines are well compacted. Use water to soak the material aiding in the compaction process. Once the material has been stabilized, the mats may be installed.
