Rattan - refers to about 600 different species of palm in the tribe Calameae which are native to various tropical regions in Africa, Asia and Australasia. Most rattans differ from other palms in that they have slender stems, approximately 1/16" to 3/16" (2 to 5 cm) in diameter, with long spaces between the leaves. Rattan plants are vine-like and very similar to bamboo on the surface. However, different from bamboo, rattan stems are solid, and most species need structural support and cannot stand on their own. Certain rattans have been known to grow up to hundreds of metres long. The Mat King offers Rattan in two formats: Manau poles are very dense first quality available with or without skin. Sold by the pole. Manau poles are used for Martial Arts fighting, SCA (Society of Creative Acronism) and in certain decorative molding applications. Natural Kooboo is solid material as well and first qwuality, but much less dense than the Manau Rattan. It is also more flexible than Manau Rattan but only available in small diameters adn sorted in 1/4" to 3/8" diameters, 3/8" to 1/2" diameters and 1/2" to 5/8" diameters. Typical lengths are from 12 feet to 13 feet, but because of their great flexibility, the Natural Kooboo Rattan can be easily bent to accomodate packaging and shipping requirements. It is often used by fireworks companies to create static displays and by makers of large baskets of in furniture repair.
