The Original Metal Studded Rubber Flooring
The Acknowledged Answer to Freight Elevator Flooring Problems

The Original Metal Studded Rubber Flooring is the realization of almost everyone's vision for the perfect non-dedicated freight elevator flooring. It combines rubber for great traction, rugged resilience, real quietness and ease of maintenance and stainless steel or solid brass studs for a tough-as-nails resistance to dragging metal drums and almost all other kinds of threats to any other kind of flooring except perhaps for an all-metal floor; but who would ever want an all-metal floor in a passenger or convenience elevator?

A mixed use - passenger and freight - elevator with The Original Metal Studded Rubber Flooring presents a neat and sophisticated look that gives passengers surefooted traction and, yet, can stand up to whatever the maintenance staff can throw at it or drag across it. If your mixed use elevator floor looks like this, you can keep retiling it with a nice looking rubber or vinyl flooring product and then, in a number of months do it again and again. Or, you can use The Original Metal Studded Rubber Flooring and must probably not have to be concerned about retiling the elevator floor for the rest of your career.

While we are at it, take a look at the floor mat they use. It is not trimmed to fit the elevator floor. It is actually a trip hazard. Take a look at how a mat in an elevator should look by clicking HERE.

The owners of this building let the flooring tiles of the mixed use pedestrian and freight elevator go so long as to have the tiles get worn clear through. You might say they sure got their money's worth out of those tiles. Or, you might ask how dangerous, unsightly and unseemly it is to allow a floor that is seen by so many users every day to get. What are they thinking? The Original Metal Studded Rubber Flooring is perhaps a once and done approach that these owners might do well to consider using.

While we are at it, take a look at the floor mat they use. It is not trimmed to fit the elevator floor. It is actually a trip hazard. Take a look at how a mat in an elevator should look by clicking HERE.

Characteristics:

1. Holes are located 1" apart providing 144 studs per each 12" x 12 " tile.

2. Studs are inserted through the back or underside of the tile. The "Face" or "business side" of the tile is the smooth surface offering the combination of steel or brass studs surrounded by rubber. The ample or wide base of the studs are on the back or bottom of the tile, which gets installed bottom side down on the deck of the elevator floor. Just to clerify; the tiles are to be installed shiney side up.

Warrantee: Please Note that when the 144 holes are punched into the rubber floor tiles so that the stainless steel or solid brass metal studs can be inserted, the warrantee provided by the manufacturer of those floor tiles is voided. The Mat King Original Metal Studded Rubber Tiles are sold without a warrantee. However, when one considers the product as it is provided and what and how it is capable of performing, the loss of the manufacturer's warrantee is quite acceptable since the "use" to which The Mat King Original Metal Studded Tiles will be subjected would not be covered by any of the manufacturers' warrantees anyway. But, since The Mat King has been providing it to clients, which spans in excess of thirty years, the only complaints we have had were from who inadvertently installed the tiles upside down. Remember please, shiny side up. Thank you.

Installation Instructions:
Important: Be certain that The Original Metal Studded Rubber Flooring and adhesive(s) are stored on site at a temperature of between 70°F and 80°F for 24 hours before installation and that the newly installed flooring is maintained within that temperature range for 24 hours after installation.
1. Floor must be clean and smooth. Remove any old floor covering and clean the sub-floor.
2. Install white felt paper or saturated paper as desired with multi-purpose adhesive. Allow to dry. (This is used to allow for easier tile removal should that be required).
3. Studded tiles should be installed with Flexco EW710 epoxy or a similar such 2-part epoxy adhesive, with the smooth side of the tiles up and with the side with the large disc side of the studs facing the subfloor. Use a "V" or "U" shaped notched 1/16" trowel as desired. Do not work on material that is installed into wet adhesive, as this could displace adhesive. When working off of material is not possible, use a kneeling board or equivalent to disperse weight evenly and to prevent adhesive displacement. Should any epoxy adhesive inadvertently get on to the top surface of the The Original Metal Studded Rubber Flooring, that misplaced epoxy adhesive must be removed when still wet. Solvents do not work to clean up or to remove epoxy adhesive. The "schmear look" that might result from a rushed installation could possibly be resolved with a heavy buffing. Allow the epoxy to "tack up" before setting the tiles in place. If it is cold or humid the time required for the epoxy to "tack up" can be longer than usual and to install the tiles before the epoxy begins to "tack up" might well impair a proper bond. A loose tile should be cleaned up as best as possible and reinstalled with a weight on top of it. There is only about an hour's worth of working time on a typical day. If the day is dry and warm, the epoxy tends to set up faster. Experienced mechanics advise that mixing a sufficient amount of epoxy that will allow the installer to complete the number of tiles that can be done conveniently in 15 minutes and no more.
4. For ease of cutting tile along walls, remove studs closest to cutting line. Pull studs out from back as one would remove a thumb tack.
5. Punched-out material or waste material from holes is available upon request to plug holes where desired.
6. Immediately after installation, roll the flooring material with a 3 section, 100 lb., crossing in a perpendicular direction after initial roll. Use a hand roller in areas that cannot be reached with larger roller. Allow 8 hours cure time before general use. Visually inspect installation to ensure that material has not shifted and that adhesive has not been squeezed out of joints or compressed onto surface.
7. Maintenance: Sweep and Wash floor with a mild detergent and water. Floor must be dried with a soft cloth. Never leave floor wet. The floor can be waxed if desired but the shine achieved by buffing is better and longer lasting.

8. Should the rubber surface of a particular tile or tiles become gauged from the type of use to which freight elevators are often exposed, such tiles can be removed and either rotated to a less visible area and an unmarred or tile or tiles can then be installed in their place.

9. If tiles need to be placed next to certain flooring, there may be a need to establish a transition between the two different levels Flexco accessory number 156 is often a good choice for that situation. Please feel free to submit the details of your particular situation and we will be pleaeed to help you select a safe and appropriate solution.

Please Note: There is no way to patch or otherwise repair the gauged surface of the rubber part of the tiles at this time. The use of marred tiles should not present a hazardous situation, however, common sense must dictate as to whether such tiles are or are not trip hazards. If there is a doubt as to their safety or appropriateness for continued service, they should be taken out of service and replaced with new ones.

Please Note:

There is no need or requirement for a flooring material to be Class A unless it is used as a wall covering or ceiling covering, which neither The Mat King, nor the manufacturers of the flooring tiles used to create The Original Metal Studded Rubber Flooring, recommend.

The Class A category is for Interior wall and ceiling coverings or finishes and that material is tested in accordance with ASTM E84. It is not for Interior Finish floor coverings. The correct test for floor coverings, per the NFPA and all Building Codes is, to our knowledge, ASTM E648. All of the flloor coverings used in the manufacture of The Original Metal Studded Rubber Flooring have a Class I rating when tested in accordance with ASTM E648.

There has been much confusion between the correct test for Interior Finishes wall and ceiling coverings and Interior Floor Finishes. In an effort to clarify things:

Flame Spread Index per ASTM E-84 (Steiner Tunnel Flame Test): This test is for determining the burning characteristics of wall and ceiling materials.

This requirement is not to be confused with the ASTM E-648 Critical Radiant Heat Flux test for Interior Floor Finishes. The Steiner Tunnel Flame Test (ASTM E-84) is only required for Interior Wall and Ceiling Materials.

Due to the number of incorrect product specifications, the United States Federal Government developed a task group in 1997, in conjunction with the GSA, DOD, AIA and many other military and civilian specifying organizations, to eliminate any reference of this test requirement in Interior Floor Finish specifications.

Please Note: The followning Standard is for "Interior wall and ceiling finishes" but not for flooring systems.

ASTM E 84
Standard test method for surface burning characteristics of of building materials.
The flame spread Index and Smoke Developed Index values obtained by the ASTM E 84 test are used by code officials and regulatory agencies in the acceptance of interior finish materials for various applications. The most widely accepted classification system is described in the National Fire Protection Association publication NFPA 101 Life Safety Code
1. 2006 International Building Code
a. Section 803 Wall and Ceiling Finishes, Paragraph 803.1 General states, “Interior wall and ceiling finishes shall be classified in accordance with ASTM E- 84.Such interior finish materials shall be grouped in the following classes in accordance with their flame spread and smoke-developed indexes.
i. Class A: Flame Spread 0-25; smoke-developed 0-450
ii. Class B: Flame Spread 26-75; smoke-developed 0-450
iii. Class C: Flame Spread 76-200; smoke-developed 0-450
Class A,B, and C correspond to type I, II, and III respectively in other codes such as SBCCI, BOCA, ICBO. They do not preclude a material being otherwise classified by the authority of jurisdiction.
2. NFPA 101®, Life Safety Code®
a. Chapter 10 Interior Finish, Contents, and Furnishings, Paragraph 10.2.3 Interior Wall or Ceiling Finish Testing and Classification states, “Interior wall or ceiling finish that is required elsewhere in this Code to be Class A, Class B, or Class C shall be classified based on test results from NFPA 255, ASTM E-84, or UL 723.”
